NETWORK SECURITY

Understanding the vulnerability of being attack online by cyber threats is very important nowadays.  As the world runs through networking, sadly say, there are trained IT people that work to disrupt, damage,  and destroy data just to gain information and money they can use for themselves. As simple as clicking an email can allow them to get into your system and get all the data they need, this is called “Phishing.” They can use all these important materials to get all the money that you have or simply alter your identity.  Two major problems I rather not experience.  As there are many more advanced techniques and trained cyber-terrorist out there to disrupt your everyday living, simply learning how to protect yourself is the main key in network security.  Taking a course at FORTINET NSE Training Institute, I learned seven important ways to help protect my personally identifiable information and my device. 

1. Don’t give out any important information or financial transaction from an unsure email, text, or voicemail.

2. Have a security mindset and ensure that all hyperlinks are coming from legitimate sources before clicking.

3. Make sure to use multi-step to confirm unique security code for validation to a system.

4. Make certain that you have the most updated protection on your computer, mobile device, and browser.

5. Always use different passwords in all your accounts and devices.

6. Always lock your screen device when it’s not being used.

7. It’s important to obey and follow the company policy. Be informed and always ask if you don’t know. 

As our world is rapidly changing in technology, we each have a role in protecting our own information. In the business industry, data is the new gold and our network security is something we prioritize.

SIP TRUNKS AND FLEXIBILITY

For companies wanting to make full use of their IP-PBXs and not only communicate over IP within the company, but also outside the company a SIP trunk provided by a Service Provider to connect to the traditional PSTN (public switched telephone network) & network is the solution. Unlike in traditional telephony, where bundles of physical wires were once delivered from the service provider to a business, a SIP trunk allows a company to replace these traditional fixed lines with connectivity via a SIP trunk service provider on the Internet.

SIP trunks can offer significant cost-savings for your business, by eliminating the need for local gateways, costly ISDN BRIs (Basic Rate Interfaces) or PRIs.

There are three components necessary to successfully implement SIP trunks: a PBX with a SIP-enabled trunk side, an enterprise router understanding SIP and an Internet telephony or SIP trunk service provider.

IP PBX is an IP-based PBX, communicating with all endpoints over IP, but it may as well be a traditional digital or analog PBX. The sole requirement is that an interface for SIP trunk connectivity is available.

The Router – The PBX on the LAN connects to the service provider via the router. The router can either be a firewall with complete support for SIP or router connected to the firewall, handling the traversal of the SIP traffic.

The ITSP – On the Internet, the service provider provides connectivity to the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) for communication with mobile and fixed phones.

THE INTERNET, TECHNOLOGY, AND BUSINESS CHANGES

The Internet has been very interesting. From the DOT COM to the DOT COM bust, technology have been changing superfast.  Then come the search engine and ecommerce. Then VOIP, SD WAN, now cloud-based servers, software, services, and software as a service.  We use to judge a company credibility by the nice fancy office that they have, how we stive to be more flexible and productive, while working from home.  We never thought that we would be running into a shortage of IP Address that soon. I guess similar to phone numbers, it’s hard to predict.  Phone numbers have had its’ share of area codes conflict as the metro city grow, they force the smaller cities to give up their area code phone numbers to the larger cities. We used to be able to buy a block of 100 DID’s for $5.00.  Now, some carrier charge $1 per did per months, sometimes even more.  We used to be able to request 13 ip address from ISP. Now, we have to pay for it. On top of that we have to fill out an extra sheet of paper stating why we need it. Ip version 4 days are numbered. Internet Service Provider and network hardware equipment provider have been making a push towards going to IPv6.  As with everything else, people do not like to change. The results are some pushed back. I’ve seen IT professional push back, as it can be costly in time and equipment costs.  So why is it so hard to migrate from Ipv4 to Ipv6?  Human by nature don’t like to change?  We don’t like to be out of our comfort zone? We don’t like to learn new things? Well, that doesn’t matter, it will be just a matter of time that we will be force to move forward with IpV6 whether we like it or not. As with anything else in the IT world.  IPv4 has its’ days.  Now, let’s talk about Ipv4.  Ipv4 is a 32-bit (four-byte) addresses.  Ip v4 can be class A, class B, or Class C address.  It can be private or public address. 10.0.0.0-10.255.255.255 is consider private Class A address. 172.16.0.0-172.31.255.255 is private Class B address. 192.168.0.0-192.168.255.255 is consider a private Class C address. Due to so many numbers of public ip addresses, I will not go into too much details about IPv4 public ip address. So, what does Ipv6 do for us?  In a nutshell, we get a lot of more numbers.  IPv6 uses a 128-bit addresses vs the 32-bit addresses.  Any person that understands binary will tell you, that’s a huge difference and a headache trying to calculate the differences, so I won’t go into details.  IpV4 has about 4.3 billion ip address.  IpV6  number about 3.4 x10 to the 38th power.  Honestly, I have no idea what that means.  Let’s just say the average calculator cannot do the trick and neither can an average human brain.  IpV6 are written in 8 groups of 4 hexadecimals each.  That’s right it’s hexadecimals. 0-9 plus additional of the alphabet a-f for a grand total of 16 characters vs the 10-decimal character.  Here is an example of ip version 4 ip address 192.168.1.1.  Here is an example of ip version 6 ip address 2200:0388:3838:efac:cede:3982:0183:3842.  I’m not really sure if that’s a valid ip address.  It does look much more complicated though.  Thanks to domain naming systems we have no reason to remember those numbers.

AVAYA PARTNER ACS PHONE SYSTEM SERVICES

We use to sell the Avaya Partner ACS Phone System. This is an old digital / analog phone system that was very popular for small business. It was very dominate for small business that needed a simple reliable phone system. This system was great for customer that had simple analog phone lines, digital phones, analog phones, door phones, voicemail, and auto attendant. This system has been install in many business throughout the world. I don’t know whether or not it has been harder to find technician or telecom dealer that can service this system or not, we had quite a bit of end user calling us for support. If your business still have this phone system and needed services such has moving your phone system to a new location, adding a phone, changing the voicemail or auto attendant menu, give us a call, we can help.

SITE SURVEY

Today we received a call from a new customer to look at their business and evaluate their issue and come up with a solution. The customer has been under contract with a phone leasing company for a few years and was unable to change anything out. Their current phone system was unable to page properly, so they been resorting to physical transfer or cellular page. They weren’t getting much support from the leasing company and now that their contract is ending, they wanted to upgrade their system with something that will make their daily task more efficient. We were originally called in for a phone system upgrade but after having a meeting with the customer, it became more than just a phone issue. Their business is growing and some of their equipment is outdated. So, it turns out at the end they would not only want their phone system upgraded but also their camera. When we first meet a new customer, we like to first discuss all their issue even if its small. From there, we can find a solution that best fit their requirements.

WIREMOLD

A customer called us to look at their camera system. Their issue was that when windy and rainy days come around, it would cause the camera to flicker. They have had one incident of heavy rain causing the POE switch to completely fail and replaced. Once we arrived on site, we were able to determine a few issues. The customer wasn’t using outdoor rated CAT5e and/or did not protect their non-outdoor rated cable with exterior wiremold. Also, they had 2 cables with coupling to relocate the camera to a new further location. The connection at the coupling were poorly weatherproof which could possibly cause the POE switch to get shorted out from heavy rain. We went ahead with replacing the cables that has coupling connectors with full runs and added wiremold to protect the cables from the weather. The customer was impressed with how big of a difference the house looks with wiremold running along the side of the house vs exterior runs.

EXTERIOR CABLE RUN

A customer contacted us today to add on two cables for their home. Once we arrived, we were told that they were quoted extremely high through others for the same two run. We proposed if they were looking into saving some money, we can run the cables on the exterior walls inside and outside their home. Their home was a two stories home with no attic access on the first floor. The other option of running the cables within the walls but that would involve a lot of time due multiple sheetrock cut outs, patching, and painting. At the end of the day, they went with the cable being exterior to save time and money.

FIBER OPTIC CABLING TROUBLESHOOTING

We have been busy doing some fiber optic cabling in the last few months, some single-mode fiber and some multi-mode fiber. Typically, during a fiber cabling job, we asked that our client have the equipment ready on both ends, this way when we finish the fiber installation, termination, and testing, we can go the extra distant of helping them make sure it’s 100% functioning before we leave. This does not happen all the time, so we sometimes get the call from clients sometimes days, weeks, or even months after the installation have been completed, to help them troubleshoot fiber. Normally after we finished a fiber installation, we terminate, and test the fiber, so we expect this to be simple plug and play, so we can troubleshoot most fiber issues after install with a phone call. It’s just like most networking troubleshooting, we always start at the physical layer. Are the equipment power up? Are the fiber connectors plug in snug? Did we clean the fiber tip with alcohol wipes? Did we roll or flop the fiber? Note: When you roll or flop the fiber, you should only do it on 1 end and not both end. Most fiber connections use 2 strands or 2 connectors on each ends. One is for transmit and the other one is for receive. You want to have transmit side connect to receive side on other end. Hope that make sense! Now, if you done all this and you still can’t get the fiber to work, it most likely will be something more complicated. These can be wrong cut fiber, broken fiber, bad connectors, bad fiber module, bad equipment, incompatible patch cord, etc……..If you need help with troubleshooting fiber, give us a call.

REPLACING AP WITH A ROUTER

A service was called to troubleshoot an AP issue. The AP device is no longer functional. The customer wasn’t interested in purchasing a new one but instead handed us a Linksys Wifi Router to replace the AP. We went ahead and assign the router IP with an unused static IP in their network. We were able to use the router as an AP which brought back their Wifi signal in the area.

LANDLINE SERVICE

We were called to troubleshoot a landline issue. Still surprising to see that there’s still customers out there that depend on their business through landline. It’s been quite some time since I have seen or even use that source of communication. Once we arrived on site, we were able to determine that it was their provider needed to program their hunt group properly. The customer was extremely happy that we able to resolve and explain to them their issue within an hour.
